Vol. VIII · Issue 03 · Q4 2024 Roster Edited by Maeve Donnelly & Tomas Reinhardt
The Contributor Index

The Roster.

Six hundred and twelve active writers. Every one accepted from a pool of forty-one thousand. Every one with a verifiable byline history, a domain beat, and a named editor who has read their last dozen submissions.

This is the working inventory behind every World-Class Article — searchable, filterable, and built for editors who treat content as infrastructure.

Searchable by beat, format, and availability.

The roster is a working tool, not a brag sheet. Filter the 612 active contributors before you brief a piece — every entry below has a verifiable byline history and a named editor on record.

Ten beats, with depth in each.

Content managers decide within ten seconds whether the roster covers the beats they publish in. Below is the working answer — the ten domains where we have at least thirty active writers, primary-source citations, and a backlog of shipping case studies.

How the roster is built, and how a piece gets out the door.

There are two questions every serious editor asks in the first ten minutes. Who are these writers, exactly? And what happens to a piece between the brief and the publish button? Below is the working answer, with no marketing varnish.

The admissions funnel

Forty-one thousand writers have applied since 2017. Six hundred and twelve are active. The funnel is six stages: written application with three published clips, a domain-specific editing test on a 1,200-word brief, a primary-source verification exercise, a paid trial assignment, a masthead review by the editorial board, and a six-month provisional period during which every submission is read by a senior editor before it ships.

The 12-point QA checklist

Every piece passes through a checklist before it reaches a client. The twelve points include: a primary-source citation for every non-trivial claim, an originality scan against a 30-billion-page index, an E-E-A-T reviewer sign-off with the reviewing editor's name on the draft, a tone read against the house style guide (currently v6.2), a structural pass on heading hierarchy, and a fact-check of every named person, company, and date. A piece that fails any single point is returned to the writer, not the client.

The editors behind the roster

Nine in-house editors staff the masthead. All nine have prior masthead experience at publications including The Economist, Reuters, and Wired. Every writer is paired with one of these nine by beat, and that editor signs off on every shipped piece. The editorial team's names appear on every order — there is no anonymous review step in the workflow.
