In the present day, everyone is looking to find a little bit of extra money. For one reason or another, we could all do with adding to the bank balance. Whether we are short and out of work, or worried that we may soon be, adding some money is beneficial. It can keep the wolf from the door, and allow you to relax at least a little bit.

The reason for this is that we often do not know what is around the next corner. The financial crisis may not have hit everyone yet, but it has hit enough people to ensure that, sooner or later, it will touch us all. Whether it is through losing customers who cannot afford to keep up an account, or through suppliers hiking costs, it comes to us all.

In that respect, the opportunity to make some money at short notice is one that should not be ignored. If we can make a couple of days' worth of money doing a job that wasn't there a week ago, it's an opportunity worth taking. An extra wad of cash for no long term commitment gives you a financial boost without tying you to a continuing job.

One line of work that allows you to do this is event staff jobs. In any large town or city, there will be an event or two of a reasonable size every few weeks, at least. People are required to staff these events, often at short notice. It may well be that the jobs are given out on a first come, first served basis. It's good to be at the head of the queue in this case.

The reason for this is that an event is, by nature, here today and gone tomorrow. A band will be touring, an exhibition will come to town, and then there are special municipal events linked to public holidays. Christmas lights being turned on, the town bicentennial, or an open-air event to celebrate a sporting victory, they all amount to an opportunity.

Event jobs are often available in connection with these occurrences because there will be people needed to serve drinks and food, to clean up after the event, to provide security or to direct people to the right place. There are countless jobs that need doing, and they are often undemanding but necessary.

These jobs are not always long term, and rarely permanent, because tomorrow the event won't be there, and it costs a lot to retain staff. Therefore, event staff are often taken on on an ad hoc basis. It doesn't suit the event organisers to keep a permanent staff due to travel costs and taxation reasons, so if you ask early enough you can get taken on.

It is worth checking the local media and job ads, as well as asking the various venues if there are event jobs going. Because it is often at short notice, the money is frequently good and the work not too hard – and you may even get to watch the event for free!
