Everyone dreams of their personal tropical retreat, complete with swaying palms, gentle breezes, vivid flowers and sparkling seas. Designing a home or even just a room, in tropical style can create your very own peaceful island oasis.

Using tropical style requires a little more creativity than some other decorating schemes. That's because it can look decidedly out of place in a home in New England or Great Britain without some attention to its context. That's one of the rules of good interior design – the style must harmonize with its surroundings. If nothing else, tropical style can work beautifully to turn a boring bathroom into an island spa.

Naturally the place to start is with color. This is one of the elements that will be determined by the home's location. For example, in a colder climate, choose a warm palette of natural tones such as muted greens and beiges for the basis of the room. In a hot and sunny climate, a Tropical room works better with fresh white and greens that mirror the colors of sugary sand beaches and jungle.

With either color combination, the best accents will be bright greens with a touch of a lush tropical tone, such as red, pink, yellow, orange or perhaps turquoise, like a tropical sea. The accent colors could show up in a wallpaper pattern featuring bold flowers, or even in flower-shaped rugs that look like giant tropical blooms.

When it comes to flooring, carpets are definitely out. Instead, go with hardwood flooring such as bamboo, a naturally sustainable product. If the Tropical room isn't a bathroom, consider natural-fiber coverings such seagrass or bamboo rugs, but don't use these area rugs where they'll get wet. Natural fibers stain easily and decompose quickly when exposed to water.

Natural-looking materials also are excellent choices for window treatments in tropical design. Go colonial with shutters or slatted wood blinds, or go completely natural with roll-up bamboo shades. If you must use fabric, make it a simple, white voile to give a floating, airy feel to the windows.

Furniture for a tropical style room can go one of two ways. For example, the room could have a jungle safari feel to it with simple, square furniture in mahogany, teak or walnut. Or it once again could go the natural materials route with furniture in rattan, wicker or bamboo. If using the latter materials, once again be sure they're in rooms that don't get exposed to water or steam, such as a kitchen or bathroom. These natural materials can disintegrate quickly, especially if the wicker is made of twisted paper. Don't forget upholstery in tropical prints and a couple of pillows in animal or bird designs.

Accessories are vital to Tropical style, and what could be more logical than an abundance of green plants? Many people are surprised to know that certain kinds of palms do quite well as houseplants even in colder climates as long as they're given sufficient light and warmth. Think of all those Victorian conservatories simply bursting with potted palms! Position a light source behind the plants. That way, they'll not only get the heat they need, they'll cast fascinating shadows in the evening – exactly what you need to imagine yourself in your own private Tropical sanctuary!
