I will start by asking a painless question. What is an icon and just how do we define an icon? What would it mean easily was to say that will something was iconic? You would say that it is something instantly recognizable, a graphic, a building, a symbolic representation, or anything which connotes something of huge ethnic importance to a wide group.
Take for example your Eiffel Tower. There is nothing else that can better embody and represent Paris and France. When we look at the Eiffel Tower we see romance, culture, and sophistication in an instant, and again every time period you look. This is usually what Paris represents to help people, and the Eiffel Tower is what represents Paris and no further words are vital. This is what defines a superb icon.
The yellow cab, with or without the checkered stripe, is a great American icon even though the Statue of Freedom, or the American Hamburger. Whereas the Statue involving Liberty represents freedom, intend and prosperity, key ideals of America; the orange taxi represents the effectiveness, ever-readiness and capitalistic aspect of American life.
The yellow taxi was made by John Hertz nearly 100 years ago when he efficiently founded the Yellow Pickup's cab Company of Chicago. The yellow taxis have been then brought into service in New york city. John Hertz chose yellow as being the color for the cabs being as people felt they were easier to spot.
Certainly in the great cities of America which include Boston, Chicago and of course New york city, yellow taxis are an exceptionally prominent feature. The roads allow me to share littered throughout, with these yellow beacons either taking or in need of passengers. This is truer in none also than of course New york city, with over ten thousand taxis in service all day and during the night. Again, here the yellow taxi doesn't just symbolize America, but also of New york city itself. American films like Cab Driver by Martin Scorsese or the comedy sitcom Taxi have no doubt played their role in cultivating this symbolism. Like the Eiffel Tower being in at least one shot whenever a movie is defined in Paris, the yellow taxi will be included in a shot whenever a movie is defined in New York. Indeed the yellow colors of the taxi has changed into a symbol of itself. If you were to ask people to think of things that are orange, they are bound of think of firstly a banana, and then probably a yellow cab.
These images have permeated independently so well into people's minds, making the yellow cab, truly one of the great American icons today.
