While there is always a need for people to donate their blood, not everyone will be accepted for the job. This is due to the strict guidelines now in place for it. Before there were requirements for giving blood anyone could do it. As a result some people ended up with HIV and other serious medical illnesses that can be transferred through the bloodstream. The goal is to collect blood from healthy donors that can be used to offer other people the very best chances of a successful recovery.

All blood that is collected from donors is tested to ensure it is safe to be used. The blood that is questionable will be thrown out so that there is no risk of it contaminating the healthy blood of someone else. With such precautions in place anyone in need of a blood transfusion should be confident that the blood has carefully been examined.

Most people have to complete an assessment before they are able to give blood. It will ask some questions about your overall health. You will also be asked questions about your sexual activities. It is important that you answer these questions honestly. Many locations will ask you on the questionnaire if you want to know if your blood is rejected. This should be a reason for you to seek an evaluation from your own doctor for a complete diagnosis.

A person that agrees to give blood must be of legal consenting age in that location. In most areas it is at least 18 years of age. Some areas are as young as 16 or 17 though so make sure you look into the specifics of this before you sign up. Most locations will also require a waiver to be signed as a precaution that releases them from all liability associated with the donation of blood.

As a giver of blood you need to make sure the environment you are in is safe and sanitary. Make sure you know who it is you are donating blood to. It may be one of several blood banks or even a mobile Red Cross RV that has come in to help increase their supply of donated blood. The needles being used to draw your blood should be new and those doing the process should be wearing gloves. Make sure you ask any questions about the process before you start to give blood.
