When it comes to nutrition, vitamin B3 plays an all important role within the human body. Also known as Niacin and Nicotinic acid, vitamin B3 is identified as one of the five vitamins that are associated with pandemic deficiency disease. A disease known as Pellagra is known to develop in those who are suffering from vitamin B3 deficiency.

Vitamin B3 is essential for the proper functioning of the human metabolism. When it comes to digesting carbohydrates, lipids and fats, vitamin B3 is an important part of the equation as well as the production of energy within the body. In the case of Pellagra, symptoms such as diarrhea, dermatitis as well as dementia are among the most common. In other words, Pellagra is a degenerative disease that is brought on by the lack of vitamin B3. Although rare, there situations where Pellagra has caused deaths are not entirely uncommon.

Vitamin B3 comes in two basic forms: Niacin and Niacinamide. Between these two forms, Niacin is considered to be the counter attack against bad cholesterol and triglycerides while acting as a catalyst to produce good cholesterol. In other words, Niacin is capable of being a decreasing factor to heart disease. As for Niacinamide, they are not directly associated with the cardiovascular system. Instead, they are much more useful when it comes to the production of energy and the metabolism system in general.

Maintaining an adequate supply of vitamin B3 is important to make sure that your cardiovascular system and metabolism are well functioning. Vitamin B3 can be found in quite a few food sources. Animal products such as chicken, beef and eggs, fruits and vegetables such as broccoli, carrots and tomatoes as well as nuts and legumes are popular sources of vitamin B3. However, a stressful lifestyle, imbalanced meal and improper exercise can have a negative effect on the vitamin B3 levels within the body. In such situations, it is important to think about investing on vitamin B3 supplements. It is best to always consult a physician before entering in to a supplement course as they will be able to guide you on the appropriate dosage for your body type and chemistry.

On the down side, high doses of Niacin, taken for prolonged periods of time are known to create several serious side effects. Liver damage, increased blood sugar levels and thus an increased risk of developing diabetes are the most common effects of high doses of vitamin B3. This is why it is always important to consult a physician on the dosage and frequency of the supplements. Since almost every dietary supplementation program takes prevailing medical conditions in to account, it is best to mention them beforehand to avoid any unnecessary complications.
