Have you ever heard the word “Catholic”? You might say, “of course, that is something common everywhere.” Yes, you are right. Everyone have heard this word, but my second question is, “do you know what this word mean?”. Well, you may also know but there are still people out there who don™t. Well, this is for you or for some others. The term Catholic comes from the Greek word kath™holou which means “on the whole”, or “in general”.
But wait, are you not interested where this word came from? Where did they get the term”Catholic”? When we try to trace the early history, we will discover that it was first used in the early second century. It was used to describe the Christian Church, to emphasize its universal scope.
We all know that Christians are people who believe and follow a divine and powerful being. They have this thing they call “faith”. Christianity actually has this thing they called denomination. Denomination simply means a large group of religious congregations united under a common faith and name and organized under a single administrative and legal hierarchy.. And the Catholic Church is just one of its denominations.
Do you know that there are actually billions of people already who believe in the Catholic Church? These are people from east to west. Proclaiming their faith to everyone even though they know that there are people who hate their practices.
In today™s terms, the Catholic Church also refers to the institutional church, the one that recognizes the pope as its leader according to one of my readings. They have beliefs and practices that are different from others. Still, they have this strong conviction that what they are in the truth.
According to one of my sources, the early Catholics were actually artistic. There was a multitude of artistic expressions of Catholicism. But, we can no longer trace it today even though it really existed. There are actually reasons why these arts have not survived.
But if I were to ask, I don™t care about the reasons. All I know and care about is that there are still things that are existing until these days. And these are the things that are the Catholic people are still using and will continue to use.
