A break up is never an easy thing to deal with, whether you’ve been with the person for a few months or a few years the burn can feel the same. There are ways to get over your ex and back on track in the dating world.
Do Something for Yourself
It may sound selfish to treat yourself to something nice after the relationship ends but it is important to do something for you. This doesn’t mean sitting on your couch plowing through a pint of Haagen-Dazs but you should do something or buy something you’ve wanted. For women it could mean a relaxing day at the spa or going out for a night on the town to dance. For men it could mean treating yourself to a day out at a sporting event of your choice or a canoe trip with the boys. You can take that money that you were planning on spending on your significant other and spend it on yourself! When it comes to ending a relationship it is important to remember that these small gifts to yourself can start the healing process.
Make Your Environment Clean
A clean environment is essential to a healthy mental state. Another step in the healing process is to avoid people, places, and things that remind you of your ex. This could be as simple as not listening to a music album that reminds you of your ex or cleaning out all the old gifts that they gave you. This doesn’t necessarily mean you need to get rid of everything, it means that you should remove anything that upsets you. If you have something that was given to you by your ex and it reminds you of the good times during the relationship it may be worth keeping but it may be beneficial to lay it away for awhile.
Get Your Feelings Out
There are a lot of ways to vent your emotions after the relationship that don’t involve you going onto Facebook and slandering your ex for the entire world to see. One way to vent your emotions is to write them down, make a personal journal and catalogue your feelings. Write about what you liked and didn’t like about the relationship, you can be brutally honest as only you will see it. Write about what you hope to find in a future relationship. Try keeping a day to day journal to jot down your thoughts and dreams or something funny you saw on the street. Reconnecting with a close friend can help the pain heal too. When people start dating they often marginalize some of the people already in their life but now that you’re single you should reconnect. Go out and have good time with your friends, after all laughter is the best medicine.
Go Outside
A bad breakup can lead to periods of depression and it can cause all sorts of wonky chaos in your brain. It can make you feel like sitting on the couch all day staring blankly at the TV. One way to combat these feelings is to get physically active. If you have a dog, take the little bugger for a walk. If you run or jog or bike, add an extra mile or two to your route. Get out with some friends and toss the Frisbee around and enjoy a picnic on a sunny afternoon. When the body is active it releases endorphins, the very same chemical that your brain releases when you feel emotions like love and happiness (and sex!).
