One can almost see the writing on the wall for traditional brick-and-mortar banking as branches close their doors, online-only banks continue to thrive, and more and more clients are choosing to take care of their financial errands by clicking a few times on a phone.
Such is the ostensible future of mobile banking as the convergence of smartphone popularity and popular laziness (or, alternatively, filled-up schedules) continue to rise. Customers are moving to mobile apps in what appear to be ever-increasing numbers, and as the cost of smartphones will inevitably decline, ownership of the devices will only continue to increase, and mobile banking will become an increasingly important part of strategy.

One might wonder, on the other hand, what the purpose of a mobile app is, when the website itself is easily accessible from the smartphone’s built-in browser, which allows access to the site as an ordinary computer would otherwise accomplish. Admittedly these are not deal-breaking sources of difficulty; however, any amount of increased speed is going to increase customer use, satisfaction, and contribute to an overall positive experience.
CIBC has certainly seen the direction which online banking is likely to go, at least to a degree, and has supported the shift by developing mobile apps for a variety of platforms, which will contribute to overall customer satisfaction in a way that was impossible before. Other banks would be well advised to follow these developments and put forth their own online banking mobile apps for the clients who are continuously on the go, filling their busy lives with things more important than chores; or, more likely, to please the customers who don’t want to get off the couch to check their bank accounts. We need to be catered to as well.
