When it comes to buying home appliances and tools to use in and around the home it can be a challenging choice. We are all faced with choosing between price or quality. In reviewing the Kitchenaid KSM150 stand mixer I look at whether the quality of the machine justifies the price. That is the question I will address in this review.
Which Wins - Quality or Cost
Whilst there are cheaper brands out there I believe you get what you pay for.
The question to ask yourself is this. Do I want a quality mixer that will last for many years, or am I happy to buy a cheap mixer that will last maybe 12 months or possibly 2 years at the most?
Buying purely on price often proves to be false economy because over the life of the more expensive appliance the cost of replacing the cheapies will usually end up costing more in the long run.
My recommendation is to wait until you can afford to buy a well built product that will give many years of service. Since I adopted this policy across all my home appliances and woodworking tools it has paid off for me.
What is the Kitchenaid KSM150 capable of doing for you?
If you want a mixer that is capable of handling all your mixing needs in the kitchen then this machine will not disappoint.
What you are getting is a quality stand mixer that can mix a large range of mixes ‚ from heavy mixes like bread, pizza, lasagna strips, to lighter mixing such as egg whites, cream, cakes and biccies (Aussie slang for biscuits). Anything in the home that is not in commercial grade quantities the Kitchenaid KSM150 can manage with a breeze.
It has a 325 watt motor that puts out enough grunt to mix just about anything you want throw at it, and the large 5 quart bowl is arge enough to make big batches of scones, cakes, muffins, etc.
Just imagine making Buttefly cookies, Coconut & Chocolate Macaroons, Almond biscuits, Gingersnaps, shortbreads, scone mixes, black forest cake - in fact anything that needs mixing. The list goes on and on. This machine will mix up everything but the kitchen sink! (Just joking)
It comes with a pouring guard which minimizes splashing, and also makes it very easy to pour ingredients into the mixing bowl while the mixer is on.
How effective is this stand mixer at mixing?
Its distinctive mixing action blends ingredients thoroughly so you will not have to muck around rotating the bowl, or be tempted to put that wooden spoon into the bowl to mix the ingredients while the mixer is going.
You want it to do more?
Yes you can do more. The Kitchenaid KSM 150 also comes with an attachment pack. The pack includes items such as a fruit and vegetable strainer, food grinder, ice cream maker (yum) citrus juicer, slicer/shredder, ravioli and pasta attachments, plus more. With all these optional goodies you can mix, make, and cook to your heart's content.
The Kitchenaid mixer comes in a range of colors that will suit everyones taste. You have every chance of finding a colour that blends in with your kitchen decor.
It is a solid built machine. It weighs around 12.5kg so you may need to find a permanent location on the counter top close to a power point.
Having a range of speeds means you will be able to windup gradually to higher speeds without having to make big jumps when the need arises.
The advantage of an adjustable speed is that at the lower speeds you will be able blend components slowly and add air to recipes like home-made whipped cream. When you turn it up to higher speeds you will be able to blend the thickest of batters.
At the end of the day do you trust the manufacturer of the appliance you are considering purchasing, or do you not know the brand at all. I personally, buy established reputable brands simply because I believe they have a standard of quality control that may not be present in cheap brands.
For me, quality and price usually go hand in hand. You need to decide whether this is your policy too. I hope this review has helped you make an informed decision.
